The Greatest Tunnel Ever Built

NYC’s urban miners, called Sandhogs, have built every tunnel under the city for over a hundred years. They are rough and tumble brotherhood of men who work hundreds of feet below New York, in a parallel universe. Their work is crazy dangerous, but also wildly important. Without these tunnels, the city above literally couldn’t exist.

This award winning feature film served as the pilot for the epic series SANDHOGS. In order to make this film Eddie Rosenstein became a union miner himself, working for months on a drill and blast gang. As Eddie helped mine the tunnels, his union brothers in turn helped make this landmark film.

Sandhogs

New York City’s urban miners, AKA ‘Sandhogs’, are the men who make the city tick. They build the water tunnels, the subway tunnels, car tunnels. If not for the Sandhogs working 800 feet below, life would be impossible for the 8 million people above. The hogs are an unsung, wild group of men who’ve handed the business down from father to son for generations and do one of America’s most dangerous jobs. This series for History Channel is their story.
